Minibeasts: stages 1 and 2
The Science 5/13 unit Minibeasts stages one and two is about the ‘creepy crawlies’ of the animal world, meaning mainly invertebrates. This focus was selected because of the wide variety of these creatures normally available in any environment and accessible for first-hand observation by children. These enquiries can lead to the development of knowledge, skill in handling living things and development of methods of enquiry. The Unit is also concerned with developing attitudes towards living things, recognising that not all children will find them fascinating.
The unit does not collect in one place all the ideas about work with particular animals but is organised around a more general appreciation of minibeasts. However, the index and the identification guidelines provide help in seeking information and activities about particular or unknown animals.
