Telling the time - EAL

Although these resources have been designed for use with pupils for whom English is an additional language they could be used with any lower primary aged pupils to help them read the time from a clock-face.

There are a whole series of flashcards that can be used in a variety of ways to teach pupils to recognise time on-the hour, half-past the hour and quarter-past/to the hour, along with some cards to introduce general time-related vocabulary and Roman numerals if required.

Within the teacher guidance there is a full set of materials to run a game of bingo to reinforce and review pupils' ability to listen, read and say the time. There are 2 versions: one uses time to the hour, whilst the other uses times to the hour, half-past and quarter-past/to.

In addition there are materials to enable pupils to record the time of day they carry out certain activities and discussion is encouraged by asking pupils to record the times of their partner. The information on this sheet can then be used in a collaborative activity where pupils have to find someone who? 'wakes up earlier' than them.

The teacher guidance contains lots of useful ideas on how to adapt and extend these resources to support or challenge pupils
