Maths and money - EAL
This resource contains activities that can be used in mathematics and numeracy lessons to improve the financial capability of pupils who have recently arrived in the UK and/or for whom English is an additional language. They can also be used by other pupils who need additional support. The activities enable pupils to become familiar with UK currency and how to pay for goods and services using both cash and debit/credit cards.
The flashcards contain images of UK currency to enable pupils to familiarise themselves with its look and values. Financial vocabulary is introduced through a loop card game, found in the teacher guidance, where pupils have to match a key word to a definition. This learning can be reinforced by using a vocabulary gap-fill exercise. In addition, there is a useful pre-prepared glossary document containing all the definitions of the key words with examples of how each term is used. Pupils are encouraged to add the key word in their own language to one of the columns to help them to fully understand these terms.
Throughout all the activities suggestions are made as to how they can be used to provide additional support or challenge.
