CIBSE Flush challenge

The CIBSE Flush Challenge is designed to be led by CIBSE STEM Ambassadors. In the session pupils learn about the role of an engineer in building services and how they solve problems in a sustainable way. As part of a team, pupils work collaboratively to complete a set of challenges. The objective is to get the pupils excited about the industry and understand the skills involved in being an engineer, whilst having lots of fun.

There are two challenges available:

Challenge 1 - Fly the Flag – (45 minutes)

  • Pupils use a range of materials to build a tower as high as possible to fly the CIBSE flag at the top.

Challenge 2 – Flush the loo – (45 minutes)

  • Pupils design a tower to support a mini-toilet and then connect a series of pipes to flush a raisin down the toilet into the sewer using as little water as possible.

Supporting documents are provided for both STEM Ambassadors and educators, which may be downloaded below. Branded, adaptable certificates for the class, to mark their participation in the challenges, are also included.

More details about the CIBSE Flush Challenge can be found here.
