Estimating biomass
This set of resources are based on Birmingham Institute of Forest Research (BiFoR) work. The activities provide an innovative way to introduce the issues surrounding the estimation of biomass. For pupils aged between 11 and 14 there are engaging activities to introduce the concept of biomass and pyramids of biomass.
For pupils aged 14 and over, they can consider the challenges of measuring the biomass of a tree. Pupils are then introduced to allometry - the study of the relationship between growth and size of one part of an organism - and how measuring the diameter of a tree trunk and carrying out some calculations can be used to estimate the biomass of a tree. After completing an example to check understanding, pupils are given a task to estimate:
- The stem and root biomass of broadleaf and conifer trees
- The carbon stored in the stem and root biomass of broadleaf and conifer trees
- The carbon dioxide stored in the stem and root biomass of broadleaf and conifer trees - (this requires an understanding of atomic mass and simple chemical calculations)
These estimates are then presented in a bar chart to compare the amount of carbon dioxide stored by different tree species.
The work at BiFoR is introduced showing how the scientists measure the circumference of trees using manual and digital dendrometer bands.
Schools can also take part in a citizen science project with BiFoR by installing a DIY dendrometer. More details can be found on the BiFor Educational Resources webpage.
