Representing functions of everyday situations
This resource features a task that involves interpreting functions that arise in practical situations.
Students are given the task of matching together worded descriptions, functions, and graphs. An example of a worded situations is a movie subscription where you get two movies free, but then you get charged at a fixed rate per movie. There are 12 situations in total covering linear, quadratic and exponential models.
This task is from the Mathematics Assessment Resource Service, a collaboration between UC Berkeley and the Shell Centre team at the University of Nottingham. A full rubric is given for the task, together with examples of student work and suggestions for helping students overcome misconceptions. Further information on the collection is given here.
