Gold award: Detecting food fraud

In this Crest Gold Award accredited project, students are provided some suggestions for project work based around adulterated foods.  Suggested investigations include:

  • determining the concentration of standard and 'value' brands of common household products such as bleaches, detergents and vinegars.
  • finding the cocoa content of different chocolates.
  • chemical analysis of various oils to determine possible adulteration of virgin olive oil
  • using DNA extraction technique and gel electrophoresis to determine the species content of fish fingers

The projects are expected to take up to 70 hours of student time.
