Expedition
This resource is based on Felicity Ashton’s expedition to Antarctica. Felicity was the first person to ski across Antarctica using only muscle power and the first women to cross Antarctica alone.
Students are introduced to the technologies that are used on expeditions to dangerous and remote locations, and in particular Antarctica.
Firstly, students consider why Scott’s expedition to the South Pole failed and why the Norwegian Roald Amundsen succeeded. They then compare these to modern expeditions like Felicity’s which took just 59 days, rather than over a year, due to the equipment she had.
Students then work in teams to choose the equipment for the RAF’s planned expedition to Antarctica, looking at some of the technologies that go into these pieces of equipment. Using the information provided, they plan five main areas of the expedition: transport, shelter, communications, mapping and food and consider the use of technology such as GPS mapping, satellite communication, high-calorie food and specialised clothing.
The resource also looks at the careers available in the RAF.
