Exploring the Development of Effective Provision for Able Learners in Science

This booklet from the National Strategies is an abridged version of the science-specific quality standards with the addition of extracts from a teacher e-module. It is designed to give an introduction and overview of the structure and use of the Classroom Quality Standards (CQS) in science. It is based on the generic seven features of quality provision which form the initial audit sheet for use in schools. The resource can be used by science departments as a tool to help evaluation of their methods and outcomes when teaching more able or gifted and talented learners.

For each of the seven features of effective provision, there is a set of prompt questions for teachers to answer, guidance and suggestions for giving support to students, evaluation record sheets for students to complete and a case study.

The seven features are:

* Conditions for learning
* Development of learning
* Knowledge of subjects and themes
* Understanding of learners' needs
* Planning
* Engagement with learners and learning
* Links beyond the classroom

A summary of the evaluation sheet is included in this resource. It includes examples of what students in entry, developing and exemplary schools achieve for each feature.
