Thinking about Design
This activity, from the Institution of Engineering and Technology (IET), requires students to deconstruct a product, concept or design. The resource is designed to allow students to:
• understand that materials can be designed and made to specific characteristics and purposes
• be able to identify the properties of materials required for a specific function
• explore a range of engineered materials, understanding why and how they have been developed
The activity requires students to watch the video Amazing D30.
This activity aims to develop the students’ ‘design thinking’ and creativity skills. It provides a structure for the students to think laterally and divergently. Students use the teaching methods described in the resource to deconstruct a concept, product or idea in this case D30 – a new smart material.
The activity is part of a full set of resources called D30.
