Investigations in Applied Biology and Biotechnology

The resource pack, written by Peter Freeland, contains 50 practical investigations designed to introduce aspects of applied biology and biotechnology. The topics are wide ranging, including enzymes, food manufacture and fermentation technology, together with health education, plant propagation, pest control, waste disposal and soil conditioning. Most of the investigations involve carrying out a number of tasks of varying difficulty. Each investigation is followed by questions, with an accompanying mark scheme designed to test understanding and to assess specific scientific skills. The investigations were written for students aged 14 to 16 years and all end with a section called 'Taking it further' which contains one or more suggestions for follow-up work.
