Groundwork - Introducing Earth Science
This resource, produced by the Earth Science Teachers' Association provides students with an introduction to earth science, starting with learning to distinguish between minerals, rocks and fossils. Many of the activities are suitable for group work, although some may be set as homework. The resource consists of three units:
GW1: Found in the ground - simple classification of geological materials
GW2: Be a mineral expert - introduction to minerals, using a 'circus' of simple tests
GW3: Be a rock detective - the use of observable properties of rocks to deduce their origins
A range of common geological materials should be collected together before starting the units. Each unit is designed to take 80 minutes, including homework. The units follow a progressive sequence, from GW1 to GW3, but can be used free-standing if required.
