X-ray Imaging

This resource from the Institute of Physics (IOP), describes how X-rays can be used to image the body. The X-rays video, taken from an IOP Schools and Colleges lecture, describes how Roentgen discovered how to image using X-rays, in his lab. The lecture also describes how barium and iodine can be used to to image parts of the body, using X-rays. The computerised tomography (CT) scanning video, also taken from the lecture, describes how a three dimensional image of the body can be constructed from taking sequences of X-rays. The teachers' notes contain an introduction to X-ray imaging, lesson notes linked to the PowerPoint and a mark scheme for the worksheet. The worksheet contains questions that could be used as a summative test on the topic (10 marks). The presentation has animated slides which show how X-rays are produced using a cathode ray tube, CT-scanning, and a comparison between the effective radiation dose for a chest radiograph and CT scan.
