Primary STEM Ambassadors: Clare Davy - Teaching DNA

In this resource from Teachers TV, Primary STEM Ambassador Dr Clare Davy inspires and engages children with activities related to science and DNA. Clare works at the National Institute for Medical Research, studying viruses which can cause cancer. Working alongside the Year Six Class Teacher of Rosh Pinah Primary School Claire develops a crime scene investigation to engage the interest of the children. Children analyse samples from the crime scene and then build sections of DNA from the suspects using interlocking spheres. They then compare them to DNA found at the crime scene to discover the identity of the villain who stole the sweets. They then have an opportunity to use the Gel Electrophoresis equipment that Clare uses in her job to separate DNA. This resource shows how children at primary level can understand complex ideas through analogy and how they are inspired by working with real life scientists.
