Sustainability: Leading the Way

In this Teachers TV programme Kevin Hull, Head of Design and Technology at a large comprehensive school in Birmingham, talks about the Education for Sustainable Development programme he has developed in his department. The film shows some of the projects in action, including the Eco Bean Cafe project in Year Seven, and a Year Ten design project based on the three Rs: reduce, recycle, and reuse.

According to the Department for Education and Skills (DfES), design and technology departments must ensure students understand the issues surrounding sustainable development, and are able to evaluate the social, economic and environmental impact of a product. Kevin is determined that his students will automatically consider sustainability in all their design and construction activities.
