Regenerative Braking
From Nelson Thornes, this resource helps students studying physics at post-16, A2 level. In this activity students consider in detail the working of energy-recovery regenerative braking systems used in some hybrid cars, electric cars and in electric trains. The main aim is to practice the basic understanding of the principles of electromagnetic induction in a slightly unfamiliar situation and to develop the ability to handle the equation for the emf induced in a coil. A synoptic element in the exercise is to consider the charging of a cell and involves calculation of efficiency and consideration of when regenerative braking is useful.
