Utilising a New Tool to Revitalise Learning in Engineering

Produced by the Learning Skills Improvement Service, these materials help to demonstrate effective practice. This case study looks at the themes of harnessing technology and curriculum development. North Nottinghamshire College received a grant from the East Midlands Development Agency to purchase computer numerical control (CNC) machine tool equipment and a bank of computers and associated software. With this investment, it was essential that the equipment could be speedily utilised across a range of courses, allowing full and part time learners at levels two and three to experience and develop skills in the use of CNC. This case study describes how schemes of work, lesson plans and resources were developed and staff were trained in ways to embed CNC into delivery of the engineering curriculum. The use of CNC equipment was widened to include CAD/CAM (Computer Aided Design/Computer Aided Manufacturing).
