Olympic medal ranking
This Core Maths task looks at how countries are ranked at the 2012 Olympic Games. Students use Excel to order the data and are asked to comment on whether the ranking is fair. This activity is designed to then lead to a discussion of weighted rankings.
The teachers' notes give an outline of the task and suggestions for extension activities.
The activity sheet gives students clear instructions for each step of as they interact with the data. This includes writing formulae so that various weightings can be used and differences in the rankings compared.
The resource contains an Excel file of data for students and another file for teachers containing an exemplar of what the final work of students may look like.
