Ed Dyke
In this STEMNET resource, maths teacher Ed Dyke describes a STEM project undertaken by his school in Harrogate, North Yorkshire, called Rocket Day. The project was funded by the York and North Yorkshire Business and Education Partnership (NYBEP). Also involved was STEM Ambassador Clive Bell, who has worked for the RAF and the Bloodhound land speed record project.
Rocket Day was a great success and helped students to see the connections between STEM subjects. It was also successful in including and engaging girls in an engineering project. Ed noticed a change in the girls as the day went on as they "began to understand that this kind of thing is for them as well."
"In the classroom, the number of A* pupils has increased and those whose grades have been boosted say they saw the value of the day and felt more motivated."
