MARS: geometry: transformations
This collection features three resources on the topic of transformations.
The resources feature:
- Concept development lessons that focus on developing conceptual understanding of significant mathematical ideas.
- Tasks that provide mathematically rich problems that come with work for students to peer assess.
The Mathematics Assessment Resource Service (MARS) is a collaboration between the University of California at Berkeley and the Shell Centre team at the University of Nottingham, with support from the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation. The team is known around the world for its innovative work in maths education.

Aaron’s designs
This task is designed to assess how well students understand drawing and recognising transformations.
There are a range of tasks that involve reflecting, translating, and rotating shapes to create designs for greetings cards. A final task presents a completed design and students must identify the...
Representing and combining transformations
This lesson develops the concept of combining transformations. In particular students will:
- Recognise and visualise transformations of 2D shapes
- Translate, reflect and rotate shapes, and combine these transformations
- Discuss some common misconceptions about transformations ...
Transforming 2D figures
This lesson develops the concept of transformations. In particular students will:
- Describe in words the transformation that maps an object to a transformed image
- Given a geometric figure and a transformation, draw the transformed figure
- Describe transformations as algebraic functions...
