Shropshire Centre for Mathematics Education

These resources from Shropshire Centre for Mathematics Education were developed from 1990 to enhance students' mathematical experience at Key Stage One and Key Stage Two. They look at strategies which can be implemented to encourage students to use and apply their mathematical knowledge in a manner which suits their individual preferences. The fundamental concepts of mathematics such as number, place value, shape, halving and symmetry can be discovered by students. When this happens, it can be said that they are functioning as mathematicians and the process of discovery and communication is more likely to lead to understanding and therefore more effective learning. Changes to the National Curriculum prompted schools to review their approach to the teaching of number and this programme of work was explicitly designed to provide all students with access to efficient mental calculating strategies.

This resource pack, from Shropshire Centre for Mathematics Education, provides ideas for activities that can be offered on a repeatable basis to most students in Nursery and Reception classes. They engage students in experiences that will challenge them and develop their ability to think mathematically.

This booklet contains ideas for use with students who are beginning to build upon early understandings of number to do with counting, addition and subtraction. It is concerned with the basic requirements of flexible mental calculation as building blocks for the development of more complex operations in which...
