Key Stage Three National Strategy: Level Four to Level Five in Year Eight

These materials, developed by the National Strategies, were intended to support teachers in addressing the needs of those Year Eight students who entered Key Stage Three having achieved level three, or a low level four, in the Key Stage Two National Curriculum tests in mathematics.

Materials to support teachers in this work in Year Eight include:

• Sample medium-term plan: year eight intervention (section 2 of this pack)
This Year Eight intervention plan is closely linked to the original Year Eight sample medium term
plan for mathematics. It is pitched at the level of the main Year Seven teaching objectives, builds in key elements of the Key Stage Three programme of study and illustrates where the materials in this pack can be incorporated.

• Year Eight intervention lessons and resources (section 3 of this pack)
These lessons, spread throughout the year, give guidance on teaching some topics that students need to grasp if they are to progress from level four towards level five in mathematics. They are drawn from previous Strategy resources, most of which will have addressed the main Year Seven teaching programme.

The lessons supplemented with resources, are:
Solving number problems 1
Solving number problems 2
Exploring calculation methods
Fraction operators
Using symbols to represent unknown numbers
Calculation methods
Solving calculation problems
Fractions, decimals and percentages 1
Fractions, decimals and percentages 2
