Episode 308: Preparation for the Progressive Waves Topic
In these activities, from the Institute of Physics, students look at waves, speed, frequency, wavelength and wave graphs. They provide an opportunity to assess and build on prior knowledge.
In this topic, there are three learning episodes:
Episode 309: Generating waves
Episode 310: Wave graphs
Episode 311: Speed, frequency and wavelength
The activities in this topic give students the opportunity to:
1. distinguish between transverse and longitudinal waves by describing the motion of particles
2. describe and represent waves graphically in terms of wavelength, frequency, displacement and amplitude
3. derive and use the wave equation v = fλ
4. use an oscilloscope to look at waves and deduce their frequencies.
