This lesson develops the concept of using directed numbers in the practical context of temperatures and temperature change. Particular attention is paid to the use of directed numbers on number lines to explore the structures:
- Starting temperature + Change in temperature = Final temperature
- ...
This lesson develops the concept of classifying relationships between two quantities. In particular, students will:
- Describe a ratio relationship between two quantities
- Compare ratios expressed in different ways
- Use proportional reasoning to solve a real-world problem
An...
This is a problem solving lesson, designed to help you assess how well students are able to:
- Reason precisely and defend their conclusions
- Use mathematics to model a scenario concerning volume
The problem is set in the context of packing a truck in the most efficient way possible...
This lesson develops the concept of making sense of the standard algorithms for addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division of positive integers. In particular students will work on the following areas:
- Improving conceptual understanding of why and how the algorithms work.
- Developing...
A group of enthusiastic mathematics and science teachers with an interest in raising student achievement and making the link between the STEM subjects spent several months working as a STEM Knowledge Network and were able to commit time to evaluating the benefits of...
This sub-collection of materials of the dy/dan collection contains three resources that bring mathematical storytelling to the classroom in the context of ‘value for money’. Resources comprise:
-
Act One: a video or photograph to provide a ‘hook’ to the problem
-
Act Two: further...
This report, commissioned by the Nuffield Foundation, addresses two questions: • What is the range and type of research evidence from countries with high performance in mathematics that gives insights into the reasons for their relatively high position? • What constitutes high performance in mathematics learning...
This activity away from the computer is from the Barefoot Computing project. It is intended to provide a theoretical understanding of why and how variables are used in computer programming, using the example of score-keeping in a classroom quiz. Involving several volunteers from the group, the activity uses...
This game, for two players, requires students to move around a Cartesian grid using column vectors, collecting stars as they go. Each star is worth a different number of points. The winner is the player who can collect the most points.
Students are presented with a conventional snakes and ladder board with squares from one to a hundred, except that the board contains no snakes and no ladders. Instead, certain squares contain a column vector. Students who land on these squares move their counter according to the vector.
From the Nuffield Foundation, the object of this module is to provide a simple introduction to the idea of a vector. Students need to be familiar with the co-ordinates module before starting this module. The development makes use of a number of simple (vector) grid...
This set of Cre8ate maths activities requires students to work with the multiplication tables, to calculate digital roots and to observe and interpret patterns. The Tiling from the square worksheet two also involves them in working with reflection. This topic and Vedic maths two explore the ancient laws of Vedic...
This set of Cre8ate maths activities requires pupils to practice number operations, to search for pattern in number and to work and deepen with their arithmetic understandings. In Vedic multiplication, these understandings are developed into simple algebra. This topic follows on from Vedic maths one and explores...
In this puzzle, students are given diagrams showing different layouts of villages, roads and farms - acting as vertices, edges and regions. Students are given a series of rules and challenged to draw maps that meet a variety of different conditions.
