RADAAR framework to support forces

This infographic guide to teaching 11-14 year olds about forces uses the RADAAR (research, anticipate, diagnose, address, assess, review).  The framework has been developed by the Best Evidence Science Teaching (BEST) project based at the...

RADAAR framework to support the pH Scale

This infographic guide to teaching 11-14 year olds about pH uses the RADAAR (research, anticipate, diagnose, address, assess, review).  The framework has been developed by the Best Evidence Science Teaching (BEST) project based at the University...

RADAR

The aim of this resource is to give students the opportunity to investigate the impact of science, technology, engineering and mathematics on radar technology. Students explore the how to build structures, then design and build their own radar tower.

Welsh versions of the guidance documents are included.

Radar Refractivity: Using Science to Help Forecast Thunderstorms

A Catalyst article explaining how weather forecasts can help keep the public safe in extreme situations by providing advance warnings: for example, airline pilots rely on accurate information about the development of thunderstorms to help them decide which routes might be at risk from lightning or violent...

Radar, Waves, Bats and BLAST

This resource looks at how distance can be measured using sound. A brief description of sonar and radar is given, along with an explanation of the Doppler effect and the wave equation. Students then use this equation to answer a set of questions.

Radar: seeing the unseen

This activity booklet uses the real life context of air traffic control using radar signals to identify the position of an aeroplane that students act out. It provides them with an opportunity to use their knowledge of waves and speed = distance / time to calibrate and calculate the distance a plane is from the...

Radians: Arcs and Sectors

This collection of interactive excel sheets look at radians, arc length, sector area, converting to and from degrees, and other related problems.

The first sheet displays a sector of a circle and corresponding...

Radiation

This Nuffield Pathways Through Science module introduced a source detector model for thinking about radiations. This model was used as students explored the transmission, absorption and reflection of radiation and then went on to learn about the radiations from...

This booklet is part of the ‘Innovations in Practical Work’ series published by the Gatsby Science Enhancement Programme (SEP). Remote controls, mobile phones, televisions and radios are such commonplace devices that it is easy to take for granted how they work. What they have in common is that electromagnetic...
