Presenting Data Graphically

This resource contains four instant maths ideas exploring how to represent data graphically. In the first task students record how long they watch TV, group the results and draw two separate graphs to compare boys and girls. The second task requires students to consider what type of diagram is suitable to represent...

Presenting fitness data

In this activity, students use the data gathered during the Wii Fitness investigation to contextualise cumulative frequency curves. Curriculum links include grouped data, cumulative frequency graphs. box plots, median, quartiles and distribution.

Cream Toys celebrates the presents that we hoped, wished and prayed would turn up in the Christmas stockings of yesteryear. From Big Trak to Buckaroo!, Mastermind to Merlin, Sorry! to Strawberry Shortcake, each peerless plaything from the '60s through to the '90s is examined and catalogued (in the Argos, rather...

Preservatives

This resource can be used to investigate how preservatives destroy or slow down the growth of microbes in food products. Different methods of food preservation are identified in a worksheet based activity then separate investigations look at the conditions necessary for the growth of microbes and the effects of...

Preserving Britain's Coastlines

This Mathematics Matters case study looks at the serious problem of coastal erosion. Much of the UK’s coastline is undergoing erosion, placing homes, businesses and other important coastal sites at risk. Mathematical modelling can enable us to understand both the short and long term processes that lead to erosion,...

Pressure

These diagnostic questions and response activities (contained in the zip file) support students in being able to:

  • Identify factors that can increase the pressure of a fluid.
  • Explain why the pressure of a fluid is a scalar quantity that is equal in all directions.
  • Explain the...

Pressure in a fluid

This activity sheet takes students through concepts and calculations linked to pressure in a fluid. It could be used as revision at the end of the topic. The worksheet also  introduces a company called Tyne Subsea who use hyperbaric chambers to pressure-test products which will be used underwater.

Pressure in a liquid

Off-shore wind farms are used to generate electricity. Underwater cables connect the wind turbines to the national grid back on land. These cables are laid using underwater machines.  This activity sheet builds on students' knowledge of pressure in a liquid in the context of working underwater.
