These fascinating instruments work on the principle that liquids change density with temperature, discovered by Italian astronomer Galileo in the 17th Century.

As the liquid in the glass tube is warmed or cooled by the air around it, the colour globes rise or sink, as their relative densities vary, indicating room temperature by the engraved brass tag on the lowest of the floating globes.
