These resources can be used to help celebrate World Ocean Day which was started to encourage people to unite and take action to protect and restore the ocean.

Some of the resources look at how changes in the climate affect the oceans, such as acidification, and the consequences for biodiversity. Others look at the importance of ocean currents, the role of sea ice in climate change, and the consequences of rising temperatures on coastal cities.

The effect of plastics on ocean dwelling organisms and the environment are also covered.

Sea level and Liverpool

A series of three short videos from the University of Liverpool, offering three perspectives on rising sea levels.

Personal perspective

The video is a personal perspective looking at changes in sea levels over differing time-scales: from second to second to decades, with both local and global...

Highways of the oceans - Sea currents and the connection to climate

In this resource from the European Space Agency, students use a multimedia module to learn about sea currents, the highways of the oceans, and how they are important for understanding local climates. Through a hands-on activity students investigate the causes of ocean currents. The final activity use satellite...

Sea ice from space

In this set of activities, students will investigate Arctic sea ice and its connection to climate. They will discover what happens when oceans freeze by carrying out a series of practical experiments. They have the opportunity to analyse real images from ESA satellites (CryoSat and Copernicus) to locate sea ice...

Ice cube melt

The video and worksheet set out a measurement challenge for students that can be carried out at home or in school. Students use ice cubes (coloured with food dye to visualise the melting process easily) to represent ice masses found in the sea, freshwater lakes or on land (glaciers.) The ice cubes (of similar...
