MARS: geometry: volume and surface area

This collection features resources on the topic of volume and surface area.

The resources feature:

  • Concept development lessons that focus on developing conceptual understanding of significant mathematical ideas.
  • Problem solving lessons that focus on the application of previously learned mathematics to non-routine unstructured problems.
  • Tasks that provide mathematically rich problems that come with work for students to peer assess.

The Mathematics Assessment Resource Service (MARS) is a collaboration between the University of California at Berkeley and the Shell Centre team at the University of Nottingham, with support from the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation. The team is known around the world for its innovative work in maths education.

Glasses

This task is designed to assess how well students understand finding the volume of a sphere, cylinder and cone.

The task involves finding the volume of liquid that three different glasses can hold. There is also work in finding the height of a cone given its slant height and base radius.

This task is...

Leaky faucet

This task is designed to assess how well students understand estimation and working with measures of capacity.

An estimate is made of how often a tap drips. The first task is to work out how many times the tap drips in one week. An estimate is given for how many drops fill a 100 millilitre bottle and the...

Fruit boxes

This task is designed to assess how well students understand nets of 3D objects, calculating length and volume.

The task shows the net of a box used for a fruit box. The net includes flaps for joining the sides together. The first task is to calculate the volume of the box. There is an extension task in...

Fearless frames

This task is designed to assess how well students understand maximising a volume.

The task looks at designs for freight containers made using metal frames. For the first task, 60 metres of metal tubing is available and students must design a container in the shape of a cuboid that maximises the volume of the...
