Nelson GCSE Maths

This series of books from Nelson Thornes was developed for delivery of the three tier structure of GCSE Mathematics.

There are two students' books in each tier, designed to cover a two-year course. Each chapter deals with related items from the GCSE syllabus. At the end of each book, there are then revision exercises for each chapter, which could be used for consolidation and practice in the classroom, for homework or as tests. The chapter outline provided in the Teacher's Books begins with a list of the main learning outcomes for each chapter and, for comparison purposes, the main learning outcomes for the other two tiers are also listed.

These relate directly to the GCSE syllabus for Number, Algebra, Shape, Space and Measures, and Handling Data. An indication of those aspects of Using and Applying Mathematics which are met in the chapter is also provided, together with a summary of the resources needed and the optional IT activity associated with that chapter. The books for the different tiers are written to run parallel to one another. This had the advantage of making it as easy as possible to transfer students between tiers, and also of making it as easy as possible to teach groups in which there were students working at two different tiers. Each of the chapters in the students' books begin with a list which gives an overview of what that chapter is about. The chapter is then divided into sections, and each section contains exercises. A few of the questions in some exercises are marked with a star and these questions are either; not essential to the development of the ideas within the chapter, beyond the relevant tier, or they are not strictly on the syllabus but can provide a challenge to those students who need one.
