Understanding Animal Research

Produced by Understanding Animal Research in collaboration with teachers, these materials aim to present how animals are used in research and encourage students to look at the issues involved.

Understanding Animal Research aims to improve public understanding of animal research. UAR works on behalf of organisations including the Association for Medical Research Charities (AMRC), the Medical Research Council (MRC), the Institute for Cancer Research, and 30 leading research universities.

Information and activities in this collection help students to discuss, debate and gain a greater understanding of areas including:
* examples of biological understanding and medicines developed through animal research
* how many animals are used in research
* what types of animals are used
* why animals are genetically modified
* how animal research is regulated
* how the animals are cared for
