Alpha Mathematics

This Alpha Mathematics resource, published by Schofield & Sims, was developed to cater for students of good average or above average ability who, after training, would be able to work individually, or in groups, with the minimum of help from the class teacher. It was designed to be implemented as a tutorial method of teaching, where students received individual help and encouragement, with some class teaching and group work for students facing common difficulties. Throughout the Alpha series, revision was achieved systematically as a return was made to selected exercises at regular intervals to practise them in short but concentrated spells in order to consolidate basic knowledge and skills and to increase accuracy and speed. Practical activities are featured prominently at all stages throughout the Alpha series, as it was felt that these were the means by which students would: *discover the concepts and relationships of numbers *develop an appreciation of money, length, mass, capacity and time *practice methods of measuring and estimating in the different units *study lines, angles, plane and solid shapes, surfaces and areas
