Resources to Support Science Teaching

This series of resources from Defence Dynamics uses military contexts to teach aspects of science.

*Carbon and the Carbon Cycle- two activities look at the carbon cycle, its imbalances and how carbon, in the form of fuel, is obtained.

*Conservation - an activity which looks at the effects of human activity on the environment and shows how military action has protected some areas;

*Fractional Distillation - students learn about fractional distillation in the context of crude oil distillation; 

*Gases in the Atmosphere- looking at the range of gases in the atmosphere and the effects of global warming; 

*Genetic Engineering - materials prompt investigations into the genetic modification of food crops, prompting discussion on the applications of science;

*Homeostasis - students learn about homeostasis and thermoregulation. A case study describes an expedition to the South Pole; 

*Nuclear Fission and Nuclear Fuels - using the context of a nuclear submarine, students investigate nuclear fission and fuels with supporting information about nuclear power in Britain;

*Response to Stimuli - students look at how the body responds to external stimuli;

*Vaccinations and Their Risks - students look at how vaccinations work, their risks, attitudes towards them and the use of vaccination programmes to support developing nations;

*Waves, Radio Waves and Microwaves - two activity sheets teach about different kinds of waves, their effects and uses;
